Overview

Our client, GroundTech, is a well-known manufacturer and distributor of robotic mowers, a technological innovation that offers many key advantages over traditional or manual mowing.

Our client wanted a brief 2-3 minute long explainer/animation video on what the product is and what it can do for the target audience. We were initially provided product images in order to come up with drawings and graphics, which would then be used for the product animation video.

We had also received a rather stiff deadline as the work had to be completed by the end of the week.

Our team put their hands together and got to work, providing a storyboard first to test the waters, just like the client requested, which was received quite well.

The Work

Any great animation video starts with a great storyboard.

  • The client had already provided us with a planned structure + voiceover to use for the storyboard and animation, and so, using our in-house graphic design tools and expertise, we created a storyboard along with custom icons and illustrations to help our client visualise the concept.
  • During our initial communication with the client, they mentioned that they particularly liked the style used in one of the design jobs from our portfolio – in fact, they handpicked the design and wanted us to work on something similar with the animation.
  • We created a graphic drawing of the robot mower using powerful tools Illustrator, After Effects and Premiere, along with our own in-house tools, after which we proceeded to create the storyboard.
  • Within the 2-3 animated video, our client also wanted us to use specific illustrations and graphics that would tell the audience how low maintenance the product is, how it is always connected to a satellite and can be controlled remotely from an app, including power up and power down.
  • All of this had to be squeezed into a short animation, where we used icons, illustrations and graphics that blended in effortlessly with the product’s green and orange tones.
  • The client really liked our storyboard and choice of graphics, providing us with the final version of the script and voiceover.
  • Once everything was implemented, we forward the animation for review and our client absolutely loved the animation style, although we weren’t quite there yet as some refinements needed to be made.
  • For example, some of the graphic text had to be adjusted to provide for better spacing, and the subtitle colour was tweaked to make it easily readable against the white snowy background.
  • We were also asked to cut down the animation closer to 2 minutes, along with a briefer, more ‘tightened up’ intro, so that the product details could be elaborated on a little more.
  • We successfully managed to bring everything down to just under 2 minutes, with light background music added as per our client’s request. After a few more revisions, the client was ecstatic to see the results, appreciating our promptness and openness to make refinements and adjustments as we went along.

“The London Design Company team listened very attentively to my feedback and constant requests for changes, refinements, improvements, all that jazz. They managed to capture the essence of my product rather well and from the moment they shared the storyboard, I knew I had made the right choice by working with them.”

The Outcome

GroundTech saw significantly more product sales as well as likes & shares on their social media pages, thanks to the animation + voiceover.

The client loved how we accommodated every design change request, and incorporated custom animations, along with light background music and the voiceover they provided – all of which came together harmoniously to form one killer product feature animation video.

“The team’s attention to detail was remarkable. They listened with a ready ear and showed me ways in which the animation and storyboard could be improved to show my product in the best light. I would hands down work with them again – I mean, just look at their design portfolio, the Philips Hearing Aid one especially caught my attention, and largely provided the inspiration I wanted for this project.”
